Don’t Believe the wicked one

Don’t Believe ‘the wicked one’

by Fred Pruitt

My dear brother —

I am 67 years old, and have been in Christ since I was 21 in 1972. I was baptized in the Spirit in my beginning days and operated in the spiritual gifts. Most of the ensuing years I have been in ministry of one sort or another. I have never had a stranger request than the one you have sent me. In my days before Christ I knew of witchcraft and had some small dealings with it, but since I’ve been in Christ not ever, not even one time in 46 years, have I dealt with or even been concerned about witchcraft or witches or spells or any the other stuff that goes along with it.

I learned early on I don’t deal with the devil. His works do not touch me nor anyone in Christ who believes. Jesus said, “The prince of this world cometh but he hath nothing in me.” There was nothing in Jesus the prince of this world could touch, even though it is true that Satan engineered the crucifixion. He put it in Judas’ heart and the scripture even says Satan entered Judas when he went to the high priest to betray Jesus. And Jesus sent him to that task, knowing exactly what Judas was going to do. Why? Because even though He knew His death was being set up by Satan, He called it, “My Father’s Cup.” Peter urged Him not to go, and Jesus told Peter, “My Father’s cup, shall I not drink it?”

And Peter even said in his great sermon on the day of Pentecost, that even though “wicked hands” had taken Him and murdered Him, He was delivered into their hands “delivered by the determinate counsel and foreknowledge of God,” (Acts 2:22-41). In other words, it was God Who purposed Jesus’ death by the hands of wicked men under the power of the evil one, in order that He might deliver those same “wicked hands” who killed Him, out of the power of evil, since He cried from the Cross, “Father, forgive them, for they know not what they do.” And of course, not just them, but all of us, who have ever lived, are recipients of His Blood and Body deliverance.

Satan did his absolute worst he could to Jesus, killed His body, but the evil one still could not hold Him because of Who He was and is. Likewise, Paul said, “Give no place to the devil,” simply meaning, do not believe he has any power or rule or any ability to touch you in your essential spirit-self. He may be able, if God allows it for whatever reason, be able to touch your body or emotions or reason, but he cannot touch who you really are, because Christ lives in you, and he cannot touch Christ.

Even in Numbers, when the King of Moab tried to get the prophet Balaam to curse Israel by paying him money, and Balaam tried to do it, for the money, he was prevented by the Spirit of God from cursing Israel, instead declaring, “Surely there is no enchantment against Jacob, neither is there any divination against Israel.” (Num 23:23). Get that? There is no spell or enchantment or any false divination (power of a false god) that can affect Israel — which means the true Israel, those who are the circumcised in heart, in Jesus Christ.

He cannot touch you nor anyone else in Christ! So even if you believe there is some “spell” some person who calls him or herself a witch that will affect folks in Christ, it cannot. We are in the kingdom of God and they cannot touch the kingdom of God. They’re in the dark kingdom and they can yell and maybe even convince people the devil can affect them which might pull a person temporarily out of faith but we can trust Christ in us to hold onto us even when we cannot hold onto ourselves.

I have no idea how to “call back” your words, but “spells” are lie of the devil and not to be believed. And you need not fear him if you know the One Who lives in you, Who is FAR FAR FAR greater than the one who is in the world. My word to you is to drop your fear and replace it with faith. Faith not in your ability to do anything, but faith in the One in you to uphold you and to keep you! We do not keep ourselves. He keeps us!

If we think we have to keep ourselves, which mistaken preachers who sow fear all the time falsely tell unsuspecting believers, putting them in more in fear of the devil than faith in the Lord to uphold them, exhorting them do all sorts of things to keep themselves, when the only truly effective thing is to “Be still, and know that I AM God.”

“Fear ye not, stand still, and see the salvation of the LORD, which he will show to you today: for the Egyptians whom ye have seen today, ye shall see them again no more forever. 14 The LORD shall fight for you, and ye shall hold your peace.” (Ex 14:13,14).

Finally, my friend, hear the Word of the Lord from Psalm 4:8: “I will both lay me down in peace, and sleep: for thou, LORD, only makest me dwell in safety.”

As Jesus said over and over and over, “Why do you fear, O ye of little faith? Be not afraid, only believe.” That’s all I have to say. Go to sleep in peace.

  1. Many times we hear about the spirit of Jezebel, the leviathan spirit, etc. I believe those “spirits” exist and can negatively impact people’s lives and the function of the Church. I do believe we in Christ and He in us as us can speak into situations that are not in alignment with God’s will, His character, nature, etc.
However, I also believe we, as believers, sometimes focus way too much on what the “enemy is doing” rather than on the Lord which actually empowers his (satans) workings. So, my question is do you believe these spirits do exist and if so, do we simply see them as agents being used by God for His purposes? If so, should we pray against and intercede for those situations where we see these things at work. Or, do we simply allow them to continue trusting God will work it all out? Hope that makes sense. Thank you for any reply. And thank you for your writings!

    • Gary, I don’t mean to be dogmatic about this. All those things have their place. I think I speak to a lot of the overstressing of evil in the body. There are some places and situations, obviously, where that kind of approach you mention may be appropriate of necessary. My problem is when people make that the norm or the only way to be. There was a meeting years ago in a church about finding out one’s identity in Christ. About 10 people maybe showed up. A month or so later, there was a conference on deliverance and how to fight the devil. A thousand attended. I told a friend there the happiest person there was the devil, because he was he main topic of conversation. And in focusing on deliverance on things like the “spirit of too much tv watching,” and defeating that, they were lucky that the next week they’d be able to come back and get delivered from the “demon of smoking cigarettes,” etc. What you focus on, you find. What you fight, fights you. People who seek evil to expose it, find it everywhere and there is no end to it. Those who turn on the Light, find the darkness cannot exist there. Thanks for asking. Blessings to you! I know I owe you an answer to your email, but maybe this answer your questions from there. God bless!

  2. People who SEEK evil to expose it, find it everywhere . There is never no end. So very true. Just like all of the false teachings out there, seeking it there will never be an end. Seeking all these evils can consume your life and bring unrest to us. We seek Jesus and He will shed truth and light on all that is false . We don’t need to seek it, the light will expose it as we learn more and more about our God. Thank you Fred, I has helped me.. Your teachings are so enlightening. God Bless You .

  3. Over the last few years I’ve had the pleasure of joining with let’s say the brotherhood of strong/young men and have seen firsthand the instant healing of the sick by my hand as His hand, and obsession with the devil and the continued eating from the tree of the knowledge of good and evil. Satan’s works get more air time in ears than the promises and truth that we are One with the Lord and He upholds and cause us to walk in His ways! I bite my tongue waiting for the question (as Dee would say if no question be asked, they are not ready to hear the answer) to be asked to deliver a glimmer of light to come though for those ready to hear. And some are hearing, but very few but that’s the Lord business, his way, His timing. Like Sharon’s comment, we find what we seek, or as Jesus said we reap what we sow. When i lived amongst my brethren deep in the young/strong man camp, it was like eating from the tree of the knowledge of good and evil all over again, but His elastic band pulled me right back into His bosom hid with Christ at the right hand of the Father. Each day hour minute lived by faith in Him to do it all. I thank God often for the way He has moved me and for my time with you and our family in Louisville, Dee, Luli, John, Harriet, Boyd, John C, David etc. We are the fruits of faith for future generations.
