The Extent of Oneness

By Fred Pruitt

(This is something I wrote in 2001 or 2002, I think. It’s a good example of what I was thinking and writing back then. Though a certain unnamed lady in Texas has prompted me many times to publish it, I had been afraid of it. But in preparation for a different article, this piece popped into my mind, and I had to go read it again. And when I read it again, I saw that my understanding and consciousness had grown since that day, because I realized that in some sense my “head” caught up with my “heart.” When I wrote it back then it was crystal clear clarity to me, but it was just something I “saw,” that essentially I did not understand. It was the “gushing of the heart.” In the intervening years, however, some understanding has come, and because of that I would like to share this article again … I have left it intact as originally written I think, except for the Scripture passages in the beginning. FP)

With the pure thou wilt show thyself pure; and with the froward thou wilt show thyself froward. (Psalm 18:26)

Unto the pure all things are pure: but unto them that are defiled and unbelieving is nothing pure; but even their mind and conscience is defiled. (Paul, in Titus 1:15)

For in him we live, and move, and have our being; as certain also of your own poets have said, For we are also his offspring. (Paul, to unbelieving Athenians, Acts 17:28)

I’ve been struck in the past couple of days by something which is so new that I almost can’t talk about it. It isn’t new, yet in its recent arrival it is completely and totally new to me. I’ve felt for a very long time to be standing on the precipice of an awareness so complete and so thoroughly simple I couldn’t see it. Like a word on the tip of your tongue, that you know is there, but just won’t come. Like I’m Dorothy, and I’ve got these slippers, and Toto & I have to walk down the Yellow Brick Road and meet the Cowardly Lion and the Tinman and the Scarecrow and accidentally dump water on the Wicked Witch of the West, while all the time the power is there at any moment to just click my shoes and say “there’s no place like home” and be home — even though I don’t know it.

At a bible study a while back, we were talking about Hebrews 3 & 4. “He that believeth hath entered into his rest” it says, and also, “TODAY — if you will hear his voice.”

For some time now I’ve been pressed into “today” by the Spirit. TODAY!!!! — if you will hear his voice. Right now, this moment, this very instance of awareness, HEAR his voice!!! THIS MOMENT …. (he who reads — THIS MOMENT!!!)

WHEN does God dwell in his fullness and totality? Next week, when we’ve grown to see more? Tomorrow? Next month? Next year? Over in gloryland?

Now, in this present moment, is where GOD IS in His totality and Actuality. NOW …. ALL the fulness of God, ALL the glory of God, ALL the power of God, ALL the faith of God, ALL the love of God, ALL the Being and Person of God, EVERY BIT of GOD …. ALL ALL ALL are in THIS MOMENT — RIGHT NOW!!!!

In this unfathomable union of being not ourselves but Him, and yet fully ourselves, we are permeated, interpenetrated, bathed in the BEING of God. We are irradiated by the brightness of His Person. We are diffused with the creative energy that brought the worlds into existence and set the boundaries of time and space.

There is NOWHERE, within us or “without us” where He is not fully BEING HIMSELF. In the infinity of space and time HE FILLS every moment and every space with the totality of HIS BEING. HE DWELLS EVERYWHERE, and EVERYWHERE is HIS FULLNESS. And that includes inner space, as well, the dark impenetrable unending depths of our own selves.

Every “place” within us, to an infinite depth, in every thought, every stirring, every question, every want, every deed, there HE IS in HIS FULLNESS. In His incarnation as the Son of Man he is called “the fulness of the Godhead bodily” and so HE was. Thinking as men think we imagine God taking some piece of Himself and putting that Piece within the Son of Man to show forth His power. But it wasn’t some “piece” of HIMSELF, but the FULLNESS of Himself — ALL of Himself, manifest in that mortal human body — “the fulness of the Godhead bodily.”

And such are we, if so be that we BE in Him. “For in him dwelleth all the fulness of the Godhead bodily. And ye are complete in him, which is the head of all principality and power:” (Col 2:9,10)

But what does “oneness” mean?

Oneness is more than every piece of matter in space and every moment of time in all times being physically interconnected in one unbroken wholeness. Though that is so (as quantum physics tell us), it is a qualitative oneness, even more than a quantitative oneness. It means that I AM the stars in all their fire and energy — it means I AM all the infinity of space and time — it means I AM the magnificent thoroughbreds, running full-tilt in all their beauty in the Kentucky Derby — it means I AM the snow-capped peaks of the Rocky Mountains in hot July — it means I AM the preacher delivering his sermon on Sunday morning — it means I AM the homeless man asking for spare change late night at the downtown gas station so that he can buy a bottle of cheap wine & drink himself into forgetfulness — it means I AM the crack baby born into hopelessness — it means I AM Billy Graham — it means I AM Mick Jagger — it means I AM Boy George — it means I AM John Wayne — it means I AM Timothy McVeigh — it means I AM the man who put the needle in his arm — it means I AM the witnesses to his execution — it means I AM the captain of the Exxon Valdez — it means I AM the birds and fish who washed dead onto the oil-soaked shore — it means I AM Al Gore and I AM George Bush — it means I AM the six million Jews who died in the holocaust — it means I AM the SS guards who herded them into the showers — it means I AM the bomber of Flight 841 — it means I AM the broken-burned bodies scattered on the ground — it means I AM peace — it means I AM war — it means I AM strife — it means I AM calm — it means I AM eternal hunger and desire — it means I AM eternal LIGHT and LIFE — it means I AM the energy of a 50 megaton nuclear warhead — it means I AM the soft trickle of water flowing over rocks in a creek in the woods — it means I AM the croak of a bullfrog — it means I AM the rush of the chaotic wind before the thunderstorm — it means I AM the animal heat of two lovers lost in the oblivious frenzy of their coupling — it means I AM that I AM the fullness of Him who fills All in all. There is NO ONE but I AM.

For of him, and through him, and to him, are all things: to whom be glory for ever. Amen.” (Rom 11:36) Again — “They are not of the world, even as I am not of the world.” (Jn 17:16)

God is known as God in His Love, which we are. The chaos of the absolute freedom of oneness is resolved in the heart of the Deity in us and changed into the sweet light of unending unbounded love, assimilating & upholding all things that are manifest in their individual freedoms and resolving them all in His death and resurrection.

From the mountains and the valleys — LET FREEDOM RING!!! The Liberty of God in Love is the heartbeat of eternity. It is the depths of the divine BEING, resolved and made into harmony by the sacrifice of the Son. Herein is our rest — SEEING GOD ONLY EVERYWHERE, (first of all EVERYWHERE in OURSELVES) and then IN ALL THINGS, RECONCILING FREEDOM UNTO HIS LIGHT!!!!

And when all things shall be subdued unto him, then shall the Son also himself be subject unto him that put all things under him, that God may be all in all.” (1 Cor 15:28)

  1. I am sitting here, praising with you……. In the words of that great philosopher Stan Laurel, ” I think you’ve got it Ollie” I Love it!!!

    • Thanks Ed. I prefer “I think you’ve got it” to his other phrase, or maybe it was Ollie’s — “Well, this is another fine mess you’ve gotten us into!”

      Blessings,
      fred

  2. How marvelous that God’s ‘macroness’, His all, encompasses in a unique way all my ‘microness’, my identity, my life, my nothingness, my vessel, my problems, my limitations, my daily grind etc. And suffering, the pressing of my ‘microness’, is given to reveal His all that is already there in fulness (2 Cor. 4:8-12; Prov. 30:33).

  3. You know this is my all-time favorite, Fred. From the time you first sent it to me…how many years ago…and again today as I reread it, it makes me soar. No longer even a hint of the Tree of the Knowledge of Good and Evil…but truly and fully the Tree of LIFE! I am glad the time came to publish it…I pray the whole world reads it!
